Academic Freedom and Freedom from Harassment in Universities

There is a lot of current debate about the meaning, nature, importance of and limits to academic freedom, including how it relates to freedom of expression.
This interest and debate has been heightened in the UK by recent legislation on the Higher Education Freedom of Speech Act, as well as by prominent cases of disruption or cancellation of speakers by those with opposing views. This is the launch event for The London Universities’ Council for Academic Freedom (www.lucaf.org), a new academic-led and non-partisan organisation which is committed to supporting academic freedom at London universities and beyond. It is aimed at those who wish to learn more about the topic, to introduce a specific perspective from an eminent speaker, with direct practical experience of the topic, and to provide the opportunity for questions and discussion.
Meet our speaker and chair
Akua Reindorf KC (@akuareindorf) specialises in employment, discrimination and human rights law, focussing on complex and protracted litigation and high profile internal investigations. She has particular expertise in the higher education sector. She was appointed as a Commissioner of the Equality and Human Rights Commission in 2021 and as a Fee Paid Employment Judge in 2020. She was a member of the Attorney General’s Panel of Counsel (B Panel) from 2019 until she was appointed King’s Counsel in 2023. Akua was awarded Employment Junior of the Year in the Chambers UK Bar Awards 2022 and was one of The Lawyer’s Hot 100 for 2022.
David Kershaw is Dean of LSE Law School. He is also a member of LSE Council, the Governing Body of LSE, and an Associate Tenant at Cornerstone Barristers. He is a former General Editor of the Modern Law Review.
