Climate Justice: Legal Challenges and Pathways Forward
November 18, 2024 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The Global Day of Action for Climate Justice on 18 November 2024 unites law clinics around the world to take a stand against the climate emergency. This year we are focusing on water.
In this special panel event, legal professionals Matt Hunt, Legal Director at Pogust Goodhead, and Celine O’Donovan, Solicitor at Leigh Day, will share insights from legal practice on environmental harm and the role of legal innovation in tackling the climate crisis. The event will aim to raise awareness about issues surrounding water scarcity, consumption and pollution.
The discussion will be chaired by Giulia Leonelli, Assistant Professor at LSE, known for her work on environmental law and regulatory frameworks. Engage with thought leaders at the forefront of climate justice and gain a deeper understanding of how the law is evolving to meet today’s environmental and social imperatives.
Following the discussion there will be light refreshments available in the Law School Student Common Room.
This event will operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Speakers:
Celine O’Donovan, solicitor at Leigh Day, specialises in environmental and humanitarian law, focusing on group claims concerning forced labour and environmental harm. With a diverse background, Celine’s practice evolved to centre on environmental justice. Currently, she is at the forefront of water pollution claims against corporations, addressing contamination issues related to sewage and agricultural practices.
Matthew Hunt, Legal Director at Pogust Goodhead, has extensive experience in access to justice for marginalised communities, having previously served as Head of Not-for-Profits and Secondary Specialisation at LawWorks. With a distinguished legal career at leading firms, Matt now drives forward complex global claims that hold corporations accountable for environmental and social injustices.
