SUMMARY:The Wonders of Originalism\, or It’s Amazing How Often Smart People Latch onto Dumb Ideas - Larry Kramer
DESCRIPTION:The US Constitution is the oldest and most intensely litigated modern constitution in the world\, and it has also spawned a most remarkable array of theories on how the Constitution should be interpreted. In this lecture\, LSE President Larry Kramer reflects on the issue of constitutional interpretation by focusing on one distinctive theory\, that of originalism. Originalism is a style of interpretation that claims that the Constitution has an original meaning which is gleaned from historical analysis and which trumps all other arguments for deciding what a constitutional provision means. Arguing that originalism is an incoherent theory\, Kramer explains how and why originalism has become an influential theory only since the 1950s. And in presenting that case\, he offers more general insights into the character of constitutions. \nSpeaker: Professor Larry Kramer\, President and Vice Chancellor \nCommentator: Justice Goodwin Liu\, California Supreme Court \nChair: Andrew Murray\, Dean LSE Law School \nThis seminar will operate on a first-come\, first-served basis. This event is not open to the public. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:AI Masterclass: Law students\, Lawyers\, Judges in the machine age
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nWe’re delighted to welcome Sir Geoffrey Vos\, Master of the Rolls\, to speak about how artificial intelligence is changing the legal profession\, and what that means for all of us. \nSir Geoffrey has been at the forefront of modernising the courts and thinking seriously about technology’s role in justice. He’ll talk about the practical realities: what’s actually happening with AI in legal practice\, how judges are approaching these tools\, and what law students and lawyers need to be thinking about as they build their careers. \nThese aren’t abstract questions: AI is being used for legal research\, document review\, and increasingly sophisticated analysis. Courts are grappling with how to integrate technology while preserving the fundamentals of fair trials and human judgment. If you’re training to be a lawyer\, you need to understand this landscape\, and no one knows more about how the legal system in England & Wales is rising to this challenge than Sir Geoffrey Vos. \nThis is a rare chance to hear from someone who’s both shaping policy at the highest level and thinking carefully about what these changes mean for the profession. \nRegister now to reserve your place. \nThis series of seminars and panel discussions invites students and faculty to explore how the AI-driven transformation of legal services will affect how lawyers work\, which skills they need\, and what the workplace of the future might look like. \nSpeaker: Sir Geoffrey Vos\, Master of the Rolls and Head of Civil Justice \nThis series is arranged by Professor Andrew Murray\, Dr Neli Frost and Visiting Professor Bruce Braude. \nThis event operates on a first-come\, first-served basis. A ticket does not guarantee entry\, so please arrive early to secure your place. \n*Note for LSE Law Students who are participating in the masterclass series. This event will count towards your attendance in the AI Masterclass series. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Fintech and Digital Finance Masterclass - Session 4
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this course is designed for Law students ONLY. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE \n\n\nCertificates will be provided to participants who attend all five Sessions. \nIt is mandatory for all participants to present their valid LSE ID cards upon arrival at each masterclass. Failure to do so will regrettably result in denial of entry. \nThis certificate Master Class Series at LSE Law School is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to regulatory issues arising in the sphere of ‘FinTech’ and ‘Digital Finance’. Both terms are used interchangeably and refer to technology-enabled financial services and products that are either novel\, or traditional and provided in structurally novel ways. FinTech and Digital Finance do not have an existence apart\, rather\, they are part of the continuously evolving financial market as it keeps developing. \nDiscussion on FinTech typically focusses on terms such as blockchain\, stablecoin\, CBDC\, robo-advice\, and mobile payment. However\, to really understand these developments and identify key structural trends they are best discussed by reference to a number of – wider – central themes\, notably regulatory arbitrage\, the increasing use of technology\, datafication\, and the convergence of financial services with other markets\, such as social media and e-commerce. \nOur Convene Master Class Series will break down these developments and set them into their regulatory and legal context. It cuts across matters addressed in the curriculum at LSE Law School\, such as financial regulation and financial law\, commercial and corporate law\, data regulation and competition law. \nThis course is open exclusively to LLM and LLB students at LSE Law School. It is designed to be co-curricular (i.e.\, not part of the LLM or LLB curricula) and complement other relevant courses. \nStudents will earn a certificate for attending all sessions\, the course will not count as credit\, to put towards any degree\, nor will it be examinable. \nSpeakers: Philipp Paech\, Elisabeth Noble \nMasterclass Session 1 – 16 October 2025 \nMasterclass Session 2 – 30 October 2025 \nMasterclass Session 3 – 13 November 2025 \nMasterclass Session 4 – 27 November 2025 \nMasterclass Session 5 – 11 December 2025 \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Book Launch - Mitigation in the Law of Damages
DESCRIPTION:The law of mitigation determines how a claimant’s own response to a breach affects the damages they can recover. It responds to the basic accusation: ‘although I did wrong\, you made things worse’. Mitigation applies to all claims for compensation\, regardless of the claimant’s cause of action and irrespective of the defendant’s level of fault. It is amongst the most litigated doctrines in private law and has significant implications for general theories of damages\, and yet has received relatively little scholarly attention to date. \nMitigation in the Law of Damages provides the first comprehensive theoretical and doctrinal treatment of this important area of the law in any common law jurisdiction. It argues that contrary to the leading texts on damages\, judges have been right all along to explain mitigation as an aspect of causation. But to see why\, we must look beyond the ‘but-for’ concept of causation and understand the ‘common-sense’ causal principles used to attribute responsibility outside the law. This approach reveals a new understanding of the rules of mitigation and their relation to other doctrines. \nThe implications are wide-ranging. First\, mitigation applies symmetrically to benefits as well as harms\, and encompasses a variety of damages doctrines that have previously been regarded as distinct. Second\, the new account of mitigation advances our understanding of the legal concepts of causation\, choice\, and loss\, and calls for a re-evaluation of existing theories of damages. Third\, the book revives and develops arguments from Hart and Honoré’s ground-breaking work ‘Causation in the Law’\, with implications for every area of law where causal reasoning is invoked. \nOriginal and thought-provoking\, Mitigation in the Law of Damages restates and explains the law of mitigation in a way that is accessible to both academics and practitioners. \nChair: Professor Hugh Collins (LSE) \nLead Discussant:  Lord Leggatt (Supreme Court) \nDiscussants: \nMr Adam Kramer KC  (3 Verulam Buildings) \nProfessor Solene Rowan (Kings College London) \nProfessor Janet O’Sullivan (University of Cambridge) \nThis event operates on a first-come\, first-served basis. To secure your seat\, we kindly recommend arriving early. Thank you for your understanding. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Sustainable Finance Masterclass
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this course is designed for LLB & LLM students ONLY.\n   Register for the event \nLocation: MAR 2.04 Marshall Building\, London\, United Kingdom \nIt is mandatory for all participants  to present their valid LSE ID cards upon arrival at this masterclass. Failure to do so will regrettably result in denial of entry. \nWhat is sustainable finance? \n“ESG” – a term used to cover a wide range of vital topics\, including the climate emergency\, biodiversity loss\, human rights and DEI (diversity\, equity and inclusion) – is one of the most frequently discussed topics in finance.  Governments are looking to the private sector to play a significant part in achieving their public policy goals\, and financial institutions are now often criticised\, and increasingly challenged in the courts\, by a range of stakeholders – sometimes for doing too much\, and sometimes for not doing enough. \nThis masterclass session will look at Sustainable Finance policy and regulation in the leading jurisdictions.  We will consider why governments are seeking to regulate sustainable finance\, what they are trying to achieve\, and whether their policies are likely to be successful.  We will refer to key issues and key pieces of regulation both for financial market participants and for corporates. \nThe session will be led by:\nAlperen Gözlügöl\, Assistant Professor of Law\, LSE\nSimon Witney\, Visiting Professor in Practice\, LSE \nTo register for this event click here \nPlease note that this course is designed for LLB & LLM students ONLY \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:FinTech and digital finance: (Session 4: Operational resilience and the law)
DESCRIPTION:Register for the event\n\nSpeakers:  Dr Philipp Paech (LSE); Elisabeth Noble (European Banking Authority) \nElisabeth Noble\nDr Philipp Paech\n  \nOverview of the Series \nThis co-curricular Master Class Series at LSE Law School is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to regulatory and commercial law issues arising in the sphere of ‘FinTech’ and ‘Digital Finance’. With these interdependencies come new or elevated levels of risks\, including risks of cyber attack\, data loss and data corruption. In this session we will focus on efforts at the international and domestic regulatory levels to strengthen operational resilience so as to mitigate these risks. \n\n\n	Related
