During the late 1960s Prof Cornish pioneered the teaching of Intellectual Property Law at LSE\, becoming the progenitor of intellectual property law scholarship and teaching in the United Kingdom. He spent nearly 30 years at the LSE between 1962 and 1990\, from 1970 as a Professor of English Law. His work combined a deep knowledge of English legal history and intellectual property law\, with a European and law-in-context outlook on the regulation of markets and technologies. The inaugural Cornish Memorial Lecture was given by Prof. Jane Ginsburg (Columbia) in 2023\, the 2024 lecture was given by Prof. Caroline Ncube (University of Cape Town) and the 2025 lecture was delivered by Prof. Pam Samuelson (UC Berkeley). In the next years the lecture series will continue to feature eminent scholars who\, like Prof Cornish\, have contributed to the study of authorship\, creativity\, innovation and IP ownership. This year LSE welcomes Prof. Madhavi Sunder (Georgetown) to deliver the lecture. \nSpeaker: Professor Madhavi Sunder (Frank Sherry Professor of Intellectual Property Law\, Georgetown) \nProf Sunder is a widely published and influential scholar of intellectual property law\, law and technology\, women’s human rights\, and international development. Her scholarship is interdisciplinary\, straddling private and public law\, and engages the global dimensions of law\, from patents and access to medicines\, to trademarks and university brands. Her book\, From Goods to a Good Life: Intellectual Property and Global Justice (Yale University Press 2012) brings a humanist approach to intellectual property law. The author of over 40 articles and book chapters\, she has published in Yale Law Journal\, Stanford Law Review\, University of Michigan Law Review\, California Law Review\, Texas Law Review\, and many other leading law reviews. The focus is on the various paradoxes that confound expectations and complicate accepted orthodoxies in property law. These subtle but persistent irregularities provide useful insights in dealing with some of our more intractable modern problems concerning the allocation and protection of scarce resources. \nAlthough all laws serve a societal function\, the framework of property law stands as a particularly powerful legal and normative institution. It structures and protects the acquisition\, control\, use\, transfer and loss of access to valuable resources. Yet what\, precisely\, qualifies as ‘property’? What kinds of legal protection follow from that classification? And\, crucially\, what lies outside the “property box\,” and with what consequences? \nThe aim in this series of lectures is to determine whether the current architecture of property law is capable of responding adequately to increasingly strident modern demands concerning the allocation and protection of new and newly valued modern resources. \nSpeaker: Professor Dame Sarah Worthington \nSarah Worthington DBE KC(Hon) FBA is a British legal scholar and barrister. She is Professor of Law at the LSE\, trustee of the British Museum and Chair of LSE Press. She returned to the LSE in 2022 after 11 years in Cambridge as the Downing Professor of the Laws of England where she co-founded and directed the Cambridge Private Law Centre. She specialises in commercial equity\, personal property and corporate law. Her work has been influenced by time spent as a part-time deputy High Court judge\, visiting appointments in Australia\, South Africa and Hong Kong\, and work with law reform and advisory bodies in the UK\, US and Europe. The event operates on a first-come\, first-served basis\, with priority given to ticket holders. \nThis lecture will explore the potential of the idea of ‘imaginary’ for the theory\, methods and practical applications of comparative constitutional law. Drawing on philosopher Charles Taylor it will examine whether a social imaginary – described by Taylor as encompassing a broad shared understanding of how a group of people imagine their collective social life – is relevant to the operation of constitutions and explore whether and how the idea might be tailored more specifically to constitutional purposes\, in the form of a constitutional imaginary. The lecture will use these foundations to consider the extent to which an imaginary\, in either sense\, explains why constitutional systems that are ostensibly similar in form operate differently in practice\, and what the conclusions might mean for the making and implementation of new constitutions. More broadly\, the lecture is designed to contribute to a range of contemporary debates on constitutional identity\, intrastate pluralism\, multi-level government\, and the path to a more global understanding of comparative constitutional law. \nSpeaker: Professor Cheryl Saunders FBA\, University of Melbourne  \n \nCheryl Saunders has specialist interests in Australian and comparative public law\, including comparative constitutional law and method\, intergovernmental relations and constitutional design and change. DESCRIPTION:Register for the event\n  \n  \nAn event to mark the publication of Democracy at Work: Contract\, Status and Post-Industrial Justice  (Polity\, 2022) by Ruth Dukes and Wolfgang Streeck\, with contributions from Diamond Ashiagbor (Kent)\, Hugh Collins (LSE)\, Lydia Hayes (Liverpool)\, Richard Hyman (LSE)\, Costas Lapavitsas (SOAS)\, Hannah Reed (Unite)\, Mike Wilkinson (LSE)\, and David Woodruff (LSE). \nIn their new book\, Dukes and Streeck argue that the time is ripe to restate the principles of industrial democracy and citizenship for the post-industrial era. Considering developments within political economy\, employment relations and labour law since the postwar decades\, they trace the rise of globalization and the ‘dualisation’ of labour markets – the emergence of a core and periphery of workers – and the progressive insulation of working relations from democratic governance. What these developments amount to\, they argue\, is an urgent need for political intervention to tame the new world of ‘gigging’ and other forms of highly precarious work. This\, according to the authors\, will require far-reaching institution-building\, designed to fill legal concepts such as ‘employment’ with political substance. \n \nRuth Dukes graduated from LSE with a PhD in Law in 2007. She is Professor of Labour Law at the University of Glasgow and Principal Investigator in the Work on Demand project\, funded by the European Research Council. \nProfessor Ruth Dukes\nWolfgang Streeck is a Senior Research Associate and former Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne. He is the author of several books including How Will Capitalism End? SUMMARY:The role of Central Banks in promoting economic stability and building social capital
DESCRIPTION:Please register for this in-person event here \nSpeakers: Central Bank of Ireland Governor\, Gabriel Makhlouf\, with panel responses by Professor David Kershaw\, Dean LSE Law School\, and Professor Alan Dignam\, KC Hon\, Queen Mary School of Law\, and introduction by Professor Niamh Moloney\, LSE Law School. \nChair: LSE President and Vice Chancellor\, Baroness Minouche Shafik. \nIntroduction by Professor Niamh Moloney \nThe event will be followed by a networking reception. \nIn this lecture Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland\, Gabriel Makhlouf\, will talk about how central banks can help build social capital by delivering on their price stability mandate. He will highlight how inequality matters for the delivery and effectiveness of central bank policies.  More broadly\, he will highlight how a central bank that nurtures social capital requires a strong institutional framework that is designed for the longer term. \nGabriel Makhlouf took up his position as Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland on 1 September 2019. He chairs the Central Bank Commission\, is a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank\, a member of the European Systemic Risk Board\, and is Ireland’s Alternate Governor at the International Monetary Fund. Before joining the Central Bank\, Gabriel was Secretary to the New Zealand Treasury and the Government’s chief economic and financial adviser from 2011 to 2019. During his time as Secretary\, he led reviews of New Zealand’s three macroeconomic pillars (monetary\, financial stability and fiscal policy) and the development of a new framework for the development of economic and public policy focused on intergenerational wellbeing. In addition\, Gabriel was New Zealand’s Alternate Governor at the World Bank\, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank\, Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
