Tax litigation: A data science approach

February 13, 2023 @ 6:30 pm

Speaker: Dr Michael Blackwell (LSE)

What makes a tax case complex? What are the differences in judicial writing style? Why have decisions become too long? Why does it take some judges in the First-tier Tribunal so long to promulgate decisions after the hearing, while others are prompt in doing so? How strategic is the state when litigating? Why does the state win so frequently in tax cases? How important is case law in establishing precedent to guide taxpayers and HMRC? These and other questions are addressed in Dr Michael Blackwell’s forthcoming book, based on data science analysis of over 27,000 tax judgments and decisions. Some of these findings and the challenges of this research will be addressed in his talk.

This event is part of the LSE Taxation Seminars series, organised by Dr Eduardo Baistrocchi. These events are held on LSE campus, but a Zoom link will also be circulated in advance. For further information, please contact Eduardo Baistrocchi e.a.baistrocchi@lse.ac.uk
